MISSION statement:

We are a group of Catholics, some of whom are ordained, brought together by our love of Christ's Church and our anxiety about its future. Still inspired by the Second Vatican Council, we want to contribute fully to the life of our Church so that we may be a more effective sign of the Kingdom of God. To do this, we believe that an atmosphere of openness and dialogue both with each other and with our church leadership needs developing. Accordingly, we aim to supply channels of free and frank communication. We desire to help create a climate of trust and respect for all where this dialogue may be fostered.

THEOLOGY statement:

ACTA is a movement built from below by clergy and laity alike in every diocese in England and Wales. It exists to give those people an effective voice. It is an instrument to establish and promote space for a trusting dialogue within a hierarchically structured people’s Church.

ACTA believes that the reforms of the Second Vatican Council are the only way forward for mission to modern society. It is not a small chapel of selected followers; it believes in the Church as a “big tent”, with open doors. As a free and representative association of believers, it seeks to liberate the expertise in the ranks, so as to bring added energy and witness to the Church in the world.

The Future is Arriving Shortly

The Trustees of ACTA and some members have been in discussion regarding the future of ACTA. At a meeting on 9th November, they reiterated their commitment to an organisation that supported open and honest dialogue within the Church. As a member organisation it has always sought to reflect the views of members. The development of synodality has sharpened the focus on the need for participation, the requirement for formation and the importance of being a “voice for the voiceless.” The need for ACTA has not gone away- but our work does need to reflect the changes that have come in the wake of the Francis papacy.

Trustees felt there was a need to refresh the underpinning statement of the purpose of ACTA, to reflect the ongoing debate about the role of clergy religious and laity, and the critical need for formation.

We recognised the need for working with others and amplifying and promoting the good work that is happening in some parishes, some deaneries and some dioceses.

Some new Trustees are being sought, and the Board is grateful to a few who have signalled their interest in working towards joining the Board formally.

The Board of Trustees is aware of the large number of members whose contact details are held at diocesan level. We will need to ensure that all members who wish to receive information can continue to do so.

We have done much in the last fifteen years and it is natural to reflect on how much more is still needed,  but that is the nature of the Church we want to be part of.

With every good wish for a blessed Advent

Celebrating and Sharing Good Practices in a Synodal Church

Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2025:  19.00-20.30 UTC/GMT

The International Church Reform Network [ICRN]  is working with CCRI and partners to present a series on good synodal practice from different parts of the Universal Church. From Asia and Africa to Europe, the U.S., Oceana, and Latin America, we have identified examples of synodality at work that we can learn from and emulate.

This week's presentation will be:

 1. Lay leadership in Small Christian Communities in the Archdiocese of Bombay with Adrian Rosario

2. Training the Trainer for work with Small Christian Communities in Eastern Africa with Fr Joe Healey MM and Alloys Nyakundi
